Pennant’s Extra Illustrated Tours of Wales and Scotland

Pennant’s Extra Illustrated Tours of Scotland and Wales, written and compiled during the 18th century, include unique drawings and paintings by Moses Griffith, John Ingleby and other well-known artists of the period. These bespoke volumes – which are built around the text in Pennant’s published Tours of Wales and Scotland – are unique because they were compiled for Pennant’s own library at Downing Hall, and depict images of places and buildings (many now vanished) as they existed when Pennant compiled the Tours.

Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru / The National Library of Wales, the holding institution for these bespoke volumes, has created digital representations of the Extra Illustrated Tours, which can be viewed here:

Picturing Pennant

The Curious Travellers 2 project includes a collaboration with the Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru / National Library of Wales crowdsourcing team to generate links between the digital editions of the Tours in Wales and Scotland and the related illustrations in the digitised Extra-Illustrated Tours. These interconnections between text and image provide new research data for the editorial team, and greatly enhance the NLW’s existing digitised resource. You can find out more about this strand of the project and it’s outputs here.
