New exhibition: West Africa viewed from Wales: New work by Mfikela Jean Samuel in response to ‘Outlines of the Globe‘ by Thomas Pennant (1726–1798): Storiel, Bangor, 4 February–15 April 2023.

Between 2016 and 2018 the Curious Travellers project curated two exhibitions.

Curious Travellers: Movement, Landscape, Art travelled to three venues around Wales in 2016 and 2017, moving from Oriel Sycharth, Wrexham Glyndŵr University to Oriel Brondanw, Llanfrothen, and finally Old College, Aberystwyth. This exhibition showcased the work of thirteen artists who had read Thomas Pennant’s Tour in Wales, followed in his footsteps, and created works of art responding to the Tour. The exhibition was captured in a fully downloadable catalogue, which you can read here. To read our preview of Movement, Landscape, Art, click here, and to learn more about our artists, click here. For a series of events held in each of the three venues to accompany the exhibition, see here.

Curious Travellers: Dr Johnson and Thomas Pennant on Tour was held at the Dr Johnson House, London between October 2018 and January 2019, and explored the Scottish Tours undertaken by both men in the early 1770s.  You can download the catalogue and learn more about the exhibition and related events here.
