Thomas Pennant and the Welsh and Scottish Tour (1760-1820)
China
The Welsh-language resources presented in this section of the Curious Travellers website were funded by a Small Grant awarded to Dr Ffion Mair Jones by Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol (2022).
The project centres on Thomas Pennant’s account of China, which forms a part of volume 17 of his manuscript ‘Outlines of the Globe’, held at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich (P/16/17). The material produced consists of a scholarly article introducing Pennant’s account of China; an Images Appendix consisting of images from the manuscript with contextualizing discussion; and an interactive map, displaying the places mentioned in the account, with a focus on five key historical journeys and on Pennant’s own imaginary journey along the coast of China. Furthermore, the images from the Images Appendix (with the titles reproduced from the original manuscript) are displayed in a gallery, below.
